The town we live in is designated "Tree City USA" according to the signs welcoming you to our fair community.
But lately it's more like "Cicada City USA", as the little buggers are coming out in droves!
Kisu and I have been walking around to check out the infestation, and here's what we found.
6/08/2007 Update:
This week they seem to be more mobile. I passed a couple trees recently where I could count a half-dozen
cicadas swarming around. And they're fun to watch land, too, since they do that with all the grace of a box
falling off the back of a moving truck! I don't have any video this week because the weather hasn't been
so good (alternating wind and rain) but here's a YouTube clip from a local furniture store TV commercial
that I thought was pretty funny.
6/02/2007 Update:
As I suspected, the cicadas we had last week were like the first wave. This week, there seem to be less on
the ground, but the noise from the trees is even louder. Here's a short video of the same area as the
previous video showed. See if the sound comes across any better.

Some people are trying to cover up younger trees, so they are not destroyed by the
waking cicadas.
These shots are from earlier in the week. The guy with the fence was understandably
thrilled by his visitors.
This is where they are coming from. There are lots of these holes all over the neighborhood.
I wonder how deep they were to have slept there for seventeen years!
5/27/2007 Update:
Here's some shots we took on our walk. I took some video, hoping to capture the relentless din that you hear
as you walk down the street, but it didn't come across very well in the video. These suckers are LOUD!.
