The Cheyenne Story - part 3 - The Waiting:
<--Back to part 2
Stephanie called a couple days after we dropped the dog off, and was told that they were waiting for the county to provide them with the owner's information. We waited a couple more days and Stephanie called again. This time she was told that the rabies tag yielded a name and address for the owner, but no phone number. They had sent a letter to the owner and were waiting. Over dinner that night, I said that that seemed a little odd. But there was nothing that we could do about it but wait. The shelter said that we could call back again, which we did every couple days. Every time it was the same thing: they were waiting for the owner to contact them.
Finally after a couple weeks, we were discussing this after I got home from work, and I said that I would call. I dialed the number and a woman answered.
"Hi, my name is Matt Bieniek, and we dropped a shepherd mix off a couple weeks ago and my wife has been calling and has been told there still is no contact with the owner. Do you have any idea what's going on?"
"I really don't know" was the reply.
"I realize that I had signed my rights away when we dropped her off, but we spent quite a bit of time with her and just want to make sure that she's going to be OK."
"Well, would you be interested in adopting her?" she asked.
I stopped. It was one of those moments like you see in a movie where the character is standing there with the phone up to his ear, blank expression on his face, and the camera swirls around. Stephanie looked at me with a quizzical look on her face. I hadn't even thought about that. I feel like I stood there for an eternity.
"Uh, yeah, I guess." I finally stammered.
"OK, we'll call you if we hear anything" she said and hung up.
