The Cheyenne Story - part 12 - Life without Pookie:

<--Back to part 11

Although she is gone, in many ways Cheyenne is still with us. Physically, she is still here, as we have her ashes on the mantle. And there are many physical things that remind us of her, even after a year. She was just such a huge part of our lives, and her passing left a cavernous void that will never completely be filled.

Emotionally, she is still with us as well. Eight years of unconditional love cannot be easily forgotten. And we still have her memory, which will be kept alive somewhat by my writing this story.

But we are trying to move on, as I'm sure she would have wanted us to do. Almost exactly a year after she left us, we went back to the Animal Welfare League and adopted a year-and-a-half old Husky mix that we named Kisu.

Unfortunately there can never be another Cheyenne. We know Kisu is not Cheyenne, but it's nearly impossible not to compare the two. Kisu's first days with us were not as smooth as with Cheyenne, but with lots of patience and a little help from the obedience classes that we started almost immediately, we should be fine.

Our friends were happy that we adopted another dog. They all said that we had too much love in us not to have a dog. I think we have Cheyenne to thank for that.

     Thanks, Pookie.
